Sunset at Algiers Point in New Orleans

If you want to use public transportation in New Orleans, I recommend downloading the Le Pass app. It makes it much easier.

Streetcar and bus rides are $1.25 each. Ferries are $2 each. An unlimited pass is $3 for 24 hours. Since I wanted to take the ferry to Algiers Point, a $3 daily pass made more sense than paying $2 each way. The pass is good for 24 hours so I waited until just before boarding to purchase the pass.

Here comes my $3 sunset cruise.

I’m going to try to get on the top deck for pictures.

That is Hilton Riverside on the left and The Four Seasons straight ahead. Caesars Casino’s new hotel is just to the right of The Four Seasons. The tall building in the distance is the tallest building in the state of Louisiana. It used to be known as One Shell Square. Now it’s the Hancock Whitney Center.

On the right we can see The Capital One building and a sliver of the Sheraton on Canal Street. The odd shaped building on the right is the aquarium. The two white buildings on the right are The Westin.

We have pulled away from the dock and are making our way to Algiers Point.

That’s “the CCC” (Crescent City Connection).

In this shot you have Steamship Natchez in the middle and the St. Louis Cathedral on the right.

That’s the old Jackson Brewery on the left. It’s The Shops at Jax Brewery now.

We made it to Algiers Point. That was about a 10 minute boat ride.

This are used to be a big plantation. There was a big house right here that burned down in a fire in 1895. This courthouse was built in 1896.

I found some sunset watchers.

When New Orleans was planned they put all of the undesirable business on this side of the river. A slaughterhouse and a black powder magazine were over here. Now it’s a nice place to get away from the city for a little bit.

I’m heading down the levee towards the Old Pointe Bar.

Old pointe bar has been used in multiple movies including The Expendables 1 & 2, Green Lantern, and Ray.

I bet this is an expensive place to live.

I’m going to try to make the next boat back. Sunset should be over by the time we make it across.

I was able to get on the next shuttle back but not outside. I had to sit inside.

It was right at an hour between boarding the shuttle to Algiers and arriving back here.
