Georges Island in Halifax

on
July 13, 2026

Georges Island is a National Historic Site in Halifax Harbour. It is home to Fort Charlotte which was designed to protect Halifax Naval Base.

I had planned to buy a ticket to the Georges Island ferry at a ticket booth but I didn’t see one. I went online and found it with grey line. It was $15.34 and they had a noon ferry available.

The ticket gave me the address which is just down from the Maritime Museum

The bar is not open.

There is another ferry as we are pulling away.

We did a loop around the island then docked.

The last ferry is at 3pm.

There is someone to direct you wherever you want to go when you get off of the pier.

Let’s check out this house.

This is a bedroom.

This is the living room.

This is the kitchen.

And this is another bedroom.

Also known as Cajuns

This is the entrance to Fort Charlotte.

There is a dry moat on each side of the bridge.

To visit the lower battery you have to do on a tour which they do every 15 minutes.

This is the powder room where they kept ammo. There was no electricity and they couldn’t light candles in here so the only light was natural light from the window above the door.

This is a rail system that was used to move ammo around in carts.

Here you get an idea of how far down we are.

And we’re going deeper.

These are slits that go out into the dry moat. If an enemy fell in the dry moat people in here would shoot them.

This is the lower battery. They would have to shoot these guns from outside with a fuse because they are so loud.

The water from the drainage system ended up down here. They would use that pump to get water to clean the guns.

From there you exit into the upper battery.

I’m heading back to catch the ferry.

I actually just missed the 2:20 ferry which means I have to wait until 3 which is the last ferry of the day. This one pulled away two minutes early according to AT&T

I guess we can get an aerial view of that reinforced magazine storage from earlier.

A floating bar just pulled up and four drunk people in captain’s hats just stumbled off. If you’re interested it’s Tiki Tours Halifax.

Here comes my ride.

They took the express tour.

That completes our tour of St. Georges Island and Fort Charlotte.
