Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO

on
October 23, 2023

Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge was on my list the last time I was in New York. The issue has been I’ve wanted to time it right to be on the other side during sunset. I’ve heard DUMBO (Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is a great place to be at sunset.

The last time I was here I did a Broadway show every night. I was going to do this on the last night but I basically picked Billy Crystal’s Mr. Saturday Night over this. My thinking on that was the Brooklyn Bridge would be here the next time I was in New York but Billy Crystal may not be on Broadway the next time I was in New York. That thinking was correct. The bridge is still here. Billy Crystal is not on Broadway.

This time I was able to book an afternoon performance of Hamilton, allowing me to do the Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO this evening. One of the reasons I picked a hotel in the Financial District this trip is because it’s not far from the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s 3/4 mile walk from the hotel.

It was about a 10-15 minute walk for me.

The walkway entrance is under the bridge.

A lot of people are coming off of the bridge because it’s sprinkling. It doesn’t seem bad to me so I’m going for it.

It started raining hard so I backtracked and took cover  under the bridge for a few minutes.

I only stayed down there for about five minutes until the rain lightened up. Then I went out for a second attempt.

The Brooklyn Bridge is a combination cable stayed/suspension bridge that connects Manhattan to Brooklyn. The bridge opened in 1883. At the time it was the longest suspension bridge in the world at 1,595 feet long.

The walkway is 18 feet above the traffic.

There is a pair of stone arches on each side of the bridge. We are approaching the first set of arches now.

1875 is when the first cables were put in place during bridge construction.

That’s the Manhattan Bridge off to my left.

And Governor’s Island to my right.

Now we can see the Statue of Liberty.

And we’re coming up on the second set of arches.

We’re coming up on the end of the bridge.

Take a look back.

For those who don’t know this next bridge is Manhattan. This is an area referred to as DUMBO. That’s Down under Manhattan Bridge Overpass. It’s a pretty good place to be at sunset.

The Manhattan Bridge is 1,480 feel long and was completed in 1909.

That little rocky beach area is likely going to be the best spot.

This is probably the best spot but there’s an entire park here along the river so I’m going to walk it and check out the various views.

This is the Manhattan Bridge.

Just behind me here there are several professional camera setups I assume to capture the sunset.

I walked to the other entrance to the park and found a sign. It looks like this is actually called the Brooklyn Bridge Park. I’m heading back.

This is probably the best area to be for sunset. It’s that rocky area I showed you earlier. It’s right between the bridges. There’s a small beach area and some steps you can sit on.

I’m going to eat dinner at Timeout Market which is basically behind us and take the subway back to Wall Street.

If you are looking for a good way to spend an evening in New York without spending much money, this is a good way to do it. I think that subway ticket would’ve cost $2.75 if I didn’t have the unlimited pass. Other than that I didn’t spend any money getting here.
